Preview

Toms River North enters as a moderate favorite after winning the first meeting on the road and now hosting the rematch. The Mariners rushed for 311 yards in that victory, led by senior Wesley Tanner’s 208 yards and two touchdowns and senior Lucas Elias’ 103 yards and one score. Both have enjoyed outstanding seasons, with Elias rushing for 883 yards and seven touchdowns and Tanner adding 830 yards and 11 scores.

In the first meeting, Manalapan totaled 271 yards of offense in the loss. Senior quarterback Cameron Desfosse completed 14 of 22 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns while adding 50 yards rushing on six carries. Senior running back Nick Palmieri rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and caught three passes for 32 yards. Senior wide receiver Cooper Savage led the receiving corps with five catches for 64 yards and a touchdown, while Justin Carlson added three receptions for 20 yards and a score. The Braves finished with 125 rushing yards and 146 passing yards, keeping the game close despite allowing 311 yards on the ground.

The biggest difference this time around could be the return of senior quarterback and defensive back Cole Garrison, who missed the first meeting before returning in Week 7. Garrison has rushed for 440 yards and five touchdowns while throwing for 270 yards and two scores. The Mariners have also been without senior tight end and linebacker Jack Baker since Week 2.

Manalapan (4-5) counters with senior quarterback Cameron Desfosse, who has thrown for 1,203 yards and 10 touchdowns while adding 416 rushing yards and four scores. Senior running back Nick Palmieri has rushed for 949 yards and 11 touchdowns, while senior receiver Cooper Savage leads the team with 30 receptions for 316 yards. Desfosse threw for 146 yards and two touchdowns in the first meeting, keeping the Braves within striking distance.

Defensively, Toms River North features sophomore linebacker Finn Boland (115 tackles, 22.5 TFL) and junior Kam’ron Morse (92 tackles, 22.5 TFL, 6.5 sacks). Manalapan counters with junior Chase Osmum (125 tackles, 12 TFL), Palmieri (93 tackles, 16 TFL, four sacks), and senior Ethan Fogelstrom (89 tackles, 11 TFL, four sacks).

Manalapan has been competitive against some of the Shore Conference’s top teams, suffering four losses by six points or fewer against Wall, Rumson-Fair Haven, Toms River North, and Holmdel. The biggest challenge for the Braves has been finishing close games, and they will need to reverse that trend to keep their season alive.

With Garrison back in the lineup and home-field advantage on their side, the Mariners enter as the favorites, but another close battle could be in store.
