The race for Shore Sports Insider Freshman of the Year featured a talented group of candidates from the Class of 2029. This year’s freshman class provided a glimpse into the future of the Shore Conference, showcasing impressive talent across all facets of the game. From dominant pitching performances and standout defense to consistent offensive production, these newcomers made immediate impacts for their respective programs.
Among them, St. John Vianney’s Olivia Haslacher distinguished herself with her ability to deliver in key moments while continuing to improve throughout the season. Competing in one of New Jersey’s toughest divisions and playing a pivotal role in the Lancers’ Shore Conference Tournament championship run, Haslacher has been named the Shore Sports Insider Freshman of the Year.
Haslacher elevated her play during the Shore Conference Tournament. In the quarterfinals against Southern, she turned in a perfect 3-for-3 performance with three RBI’s. She followed that effort with two hits and another RBI in the semifinal victory over Middletown South.
One of her most memorable performances came on the biggest stage of the season — the SCT championship game. After recording St. John Vianney’s first hit of the contest in the second inning, Haslacher delivered a clutch two-out RBI single in the third. Battling through a nine-pitch at-bat that included five consecutive foul balls, she lined a single to right field to drive in two runs and give the Lancers a 2-1 lead.
Haslacher also shined in the NJSIAA Non-Public A state championship game against Mount St. Dominic, the No. 2-ranked team in the state. She finished 3-for-4 at the plate and played a key role in St. John Vianney’s 10-0 victory. In the first inning, she drove in a run with a single to left field to help the Lancers build an early 2-0 advantage. Later, with St. John Vianney seeking two runs in the sixth inning to secure a mercy-rule victory, Haslacher led off the frame with a line-drive single to left field. Although she was later forced out on the bases, she sparked the rally that ultimately produced the game’s final runs.
St. John Vianney head coach Kim Lombardi-McDougall praised Haslacher’s growth and consistency throughout the state tournament run, noting the freshman’s increasing confidence and ability to deliver in key situations.
“As the postseason’s been going on a little bit, I find her more confident,” Lombardi-McDougall said. “Since day one she always got a hit. They are not home run hits, but guess what? She does her job. She gets the base hit that you need.”
With Haslacher and fellow freshman standout Peyton McDougall earning spots on the Shore Sports Insider All-Freshman Team, the future remains bright for St. John Vianney. The Lancers appear well-positioned to continue their tradition of competing for Shore Conference championships and state titles in the years ahead.
