Ocean County Tournament
First Round
(12) Southern 13, (5) Jackson Memorial 7
Mike Kaczynski drove in three runs on two different hits during a seven-run fifth inning and the Rams scored 11 unanswered runs to turn a five-run deficit into a first-round romp over the Jaguars.
Jackson Memorial answered Southern’s two runs in the top of the first with two in the bottom of the inning and five in the third to open up a 7-2 lead. Kaczynski began Southern’s march back into the game with an RBI double that cut Jackson Memorial’s lead to 7-3. Harrison Grose made it back-to-back RBI doubles and winning pitcher Tyler McLeod singled home a run to make it 7-5.
An error and a bases-loaded walk tied the game and with two out in the inning, Kaczynski struck again, this time with a two-run single to give the Rams a 9-7 lead.
Southern kept the pressure on with back-to-back RBI singles by Aiden Miller and Frankie Himmelreich to extend the Rams’ lead to 11-7 in the top of the sixth. Kaczynski and Grose each scored on a wild pitch with two out in the seventh to cap the scoring.
McLeod opened the scoring with a two-run double and pitched five scoreless innings of relief to earn his first win of the season. Before McLeod came on to pitch, Jackson Memorial piled up seven runs, starting with a game-tying two-run home run by Brady Wendell in the bottom of the first.
Southern will travel to play No. 4 seed Central Tuesday in the Ocean County Tournament quarterfinals.

No. 5 Toms River East 11, Rutherford 8
Carson Frazier hit the game-tying RBI single and Jax Buatez lined the go-ahead two-run single in a five-run seventh that capped a come-from-behind win for the Raiders over the Bulldogs.
Toms River East fell into a 5-0 hole in the first inning and chipped away at the deficit with one run each in both the third and fourth innings. Winning pitcher Gavin Toth hit an RBI ground out to get the Raiders on the board in the third after Joey DiMeo walked and stole both second and third before scoring. In the fourth, Mike Vaccarino reached on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Frazier to cut the Rutherford lead to 6-2.
Toms River East’s offense came to life in the fifth, during which the Raiders scored four runs to tie the game, 6-6. Toth singled home a run and Vaccarino slammed an RBI double that pulled the Raiders within 6-5. Dan Nafziger then tied the score with an RBI single.
Alex Tran broke the tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth and Andrew Erickson added a second run in the inning with a two-out RBI triple that plated Tran and pushed Rutherford’s lead to 8-6.
Matt Ferrara jump-started the winning rally when he was hit by a pitch, stole both second and third and scored on a wild pickoff attempt at third base to pull the Raiders within a run. Vaccarino then drew a walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a fly out to rightfield by Nafziger.
Frazier then stepped in and punched an RBI single through the middle of a drawn-in infield to tie the game, 8-8. Frazier moved up one base on a passed ball and once again on a ground out for the second out of the inning. Catcher Dominik Sabatino was hit by a pitch to put the winning run on in the form of courtesy runner Jonathan Pallman, who stole second base.
Buatez stepped in and delivered a line-drive single to centerfield that scored both Frazier and Pallman for a 10-8 Toms River East lead, with Buatez advancing to second base on the throw home. Joey DiMeo then lined a single into center to push the lead to 11-8 and cap the scoring. After the leadoff batter in the bottom of the seventh reached on a third-strike wild pitch, Toth set down the next three batters in order to close out the victory.
