Class A South

No. 8 Jackson Memorial 2, Southern 1

Freshman Mike Fogarty singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh, stole second base and scored the winning run on a one-out error on a ground ball hit by Chris Vilanova to make a winner of the Jaguars and starter Danny Hutchinson in an opening-day clash with the defending Class A South champion Rams.

Hutchinson’s lone run allowed was unearned and the senior right-hander did not allow more than one Southern baserunner in any inning except the top of the second, when the Rams scratched across their only run. Southern starting pitcher Trevor Kerlin led off the inning with a single and Tyler McLeod followed with a walk. Aiden Miller then dropped a sacrifice bunt that Hutchinson threw away to allow the lone Rams run of the game to score.

Jackson Memorial gave Hutchinson an early 1-0 lead with a rally in the bottom of the first. Third baseman Brady Wendell doubled home fellow senior Jackson Osmond — who led off with a single — as part of a 3-for-3 game at the plate.

Manasquan 4, St. Rose 0

Junior left-hander Chase Kaplan struck out the first 12 hitters he faced before allowing his first base-runner and finished with 14 strikeouts in five two-hit innings as the Warriors blanked the Purple Roses to win their second straight to open the season.

Tyler Hager broke up Kaplan’s strikeout streak and perfect-game bid with a clean single to rightfield on a 1-2 count leading off the fifth inning. Max Glassberg sacrificed Hager to second base and Jake Whitehead beat out an infield single with two out to set St. Rose up with runners on the corners and two out with Manasquan clinging to a 1-0 lead. Kaplan reached back and struck out the final batter he faced on three straight pitches.

Senior right-hander R.T. Runge pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh innings with four strikeouts, giving Manasquan pitching 18 strikeouts and no walks in a combined three-hit shutout.

Liam Opatesky staked Manasquan to a 1-0 lead with an opposite-field, RBI double into the leftfield corner in the bottom of the second and the Warriors tacked on two in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI triple by Shane Hagerman, followed by an RBI single by catcher Connor Voelksen. Manasquan added an insurance run in the sixth on a balk.

Class C North

Holmdel 3, Raritan 2

Catcher Matt Iulo led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double that broke up a no-hit bid and scored on a tie-breaking RBI single by Kyle Silberman as the Hornets and Dylan Zammit won a pitcher’s duel over starter Will Meehan and the Rockets.

Meehan no-hit Holmdel over five innings but was lifted with 81 pitches after five innings for Jimmy Nichols. Nick Rakoski followed Iulo’s double with a walk and Silberman yanked a single through the left side to score Iulo and send Rakoski to third base. Tyler Reddy then delivered Holmdel what proved to be the winning run in the form of a sacrifice fly.

Travis Evernham drove in both Raritan runs — the first on a base-loaded walk to tie the game, 1-1, in the fourth and the second with an RBI double to pull Raritan within 3-2 in the top of the seventh. Jake Ricchuiti tripled to lead off the seventh and scored on Evernham’s double with none out. Evernham advanced to third on a groundout back to Zammit, who then came up with a huge strikeout for the second out before ending the game by inducing a fly out.
