(4) Middletown South 66, (5) Hopewell Valley 62 (2 OT)
Freshman Ryan Gannon scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in overtime, including a game-tying three-pointer with nine seconds in the first overtime session, to help carry the Eagles (16-11) past the Bulldogs (18-7) and into the sectional semifinals Wednesday at top-seeded Lawrence.
Gannon’s stepback three from the top of the key with nine seconds left in overtime tied the game, 52-52, and pushed it to a second overtime period. Gannon hit a pair of free throws to give Middletown South a 61-60 lead with 1:30 left, then went 5-for-6 from the line the rest of the way to close out the win.
Freshman Evan Wells added 14 points, senior Michael Fitzpatrick threw in 10 and senior Beckett Oliver netted nine for Middletown South, which scored 23 points in overtime after each team scored only 43 in regulation.
(1) Lawrence 49, (9) Colts Neck 48
Colts Neck sophomore Nate Sloane matched Lawrence senior Marvin McNeill with a game-high 20 points, but the Cougars (13-13) came up short of an upset, ending their Group III title defense in the sectional quarterfinals against the top-seeded Cardinals (19-8).
Sloane hit a three-pointer from the left wing to pull Colts Neck within 47-46 with under a minute to go and Lawrence’s 2-for-8 shooting from the free-throw line in the final minute kept the Cougars in the game. With his team trailing, 49-46, Sloane was fouled on a three-point attempt with 15 seconds left and hit the second two free throws after his first attempt rimmed out.
After two missed free throws by Lawrence, Colts Neck drew up a play out of a timeout with four seconds left, but senior Dillon Younger’s three-point try missed the mark to end the game.
Sloane also grabbed nine rebounds and Younger finished his decorated four-year varsity career at Colts Neck with 12 points.
Central Jersey Group I
(2) Point Beach 70, (10) Dayton 57
Senior Jacob Edgecomb scored 16 points and six Point Beach players scored at least eight points in a well-balanced attack that carried the Garnet Gulls (20-7, 13-15) to a win over the Bulldogs. Point Beach moves on to the sectional semifinals and will host No. 6 Manville on Wednesday.
Junior Tyler Preston poured in 15 points, senior Elijah Ives chipped in 12 and junior George Breckenridge added 10 to give Point Beach four players in double-figures. Junior Ryan Mahoney added nine points and classmate Danny Cavanaugh contributed eight in the win.
(4) Shore 51, (12) New Providence 45
Seniors Andrew Barham and Finn Watson each scored 13 points and the Blue Devils (21-6) stormed back from a 13-point halftime deficit to upend the Pioneers (8-18), earning Shore a spot in the sectional semifinals for the third time in four years.
Junior Maddox Paulin added 12 points on three three-pointers for Shore, which outscored New Providence, 19-11, in the third quarter and closed out the win by outscoring the visitors, 14-3, in the fourth.
Shore will travel to No. 1 seed and defending Group I champion Thrive Charter in Hamilton on Wednesday.
(1) Thrive Charter 80, (8) Henry Hudson 44
Tyler Hammond scored 19 points and Marjon Skillman posted 15 points and eight rebounds as the Titans (19-5) overpowered the Admirals (18-9) to move on to the sectional semifinals Wednesday against No. 4 Shore.
Junior JoJo Newell led Henry Hudson with 18 points and classmate Jaxsen Schmiedel added 11 in the loss.
South Jersey Group III
(7) Toms River South 42, (15) Mainland 37
Senior Kharii Pringle scored 15 of Toms River South’s first 20 points on the way to a game-high 17 that led the Indians (16-12) over the Mustangs (11-16) and into the sectional semifinals for the first time since 2015. Toms River South will travel to play No. 3 seed and defending sectional champion Ocean City Wednesday in the semifinal round.
After Toms River South built up a 15-6 lead early in the second quarter, Mainland closed the half with a 9-1 run and made it 12-1 with the first three points of the third quarter, staking the Mustangs to an 18-16 lead. Pringle then responded with back-to-back baskets to push Toms River South back in front and found senior Jacob Myers for a layup that made it 22-18. The Indians would not give the lead back the rest of the way.
Senior Shane Gambarony scored eight of his 12 points in the second half after sitting for a chunk of the first half with two fouls. Myers and fellow senior Brady Gibson each added four points and combined for 18 rebounds, with Myers grabbing 10 and Gibson pulling in eight. Pringle, Gambarony and Gibson also led the defensive effort by the Indians with four steals apiece as Toms River South forced 17 turnovers and held a second straight opponent under 40 points.
South Jersey Group I
(14) New Egypt 47, (6) Penns Grove 38
Senior Nolan Arnold pumped in 20 points and the Warriors (13-14) were road warriors for the second time in four days, this time pulling off a quarterfinal upset of the Red Devils (17-12) to earn a spot in Wednesday’s sectional semifinal at second-seeded Palmyra.
Senior Clyde Ferris delivered 16 points with three three-pointers for New Egypt, which pulled away with a 20-13 fourth quarter after entering the final eight minutes clinging to a 27-25 lead. Senior Ryan Reynolds and junior Paul Kennedy rounded out the Warriors scoring, with Reynolds scoring six and Kennedy going for five.
South Jersey Non-Public A
(2) CBA 81, (7) Camden Catholic 47
Junior Avery Lynch scored a game-high 17 points to lead six CBA players with at least eight points as the Colts (24-3) rolled through the Irish (16-11) and into the sectional semifinals, which they will host Thursday against No. 3 St. Peter’s Prep in a showdown of two of the top five teams in New Jersey, according to NJ Advance Media.
Seniors Connor Andree and Charlie Marcoullier each added 10 points, sophomore Izayah Cooper netted nine and senior Charlie Messano and junior David Buley each chipped in eight for CBA, which blew the game open with a 23-4 second quarter that sent the Colts to the halftime locker room with a 40-18 lead.
(4) St. Joseph Metuchen 65, (5) Red Bank Catholic 46
Juniors Andrew Kretkowski and Aidan Carter combined for 35 points and the Falcons (28-1) used a strong first half to roll past the Caseys (20-8) and into the sectional semifinals Thursday at No. 1 Paul VI.
Senior James Hankowski hit five three-pointers for a team-high 15 points to lead RBC, which trailed, 34-16 at halftime. Junior Gavin Biasi also poured in 13 points for the Caseys.
South Jersey Non-Public B
(3) Holy Spirit 74, (6) Ranney 54
Junior Alex Heyser scored 19 points and the Panthers (14-12) took a one-point lead into halftime, but Jordan Gonzalez and Kevin Brewster took over for the Spartans (20-6) in the second half, leading Holy Spirit to the sectional semifinals.
Junior Andrew Mardahaev added 12 points and sophomore A.J. Mizhir chipped in nine for Ranney.
(1) Rutgers Prep 68, (8) St. Rose 61
Senior Tyler Cameron scored a game-high 30 points hit a free throw with 53 seconds left to pull St. Rose within 62-61 of the top-seeded Argonauts (18-9), but junior Rocco Loomis went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute to help Rutgers Prep dodge an upset bid by the Purple Roses (7-21).
Sophomore Ajay Catania hit five three-pointers on the way to 17 points, senior O’Rien Campbell added eight points and junior Marco Leonardis netted six for St. Rose, which sounded the upset alarm by taking a 19-12 lead through one quarter and a 25-24 lead into halftime.
Loomis scored 26 points to lead Rutgers Prep, which will host No. 5 Bishop Eustace Thursday in the sectional semifinal round. Sophomore William Brunson posted 21 points, 21 rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots in the win.
