No. 1 St. Rose 78, Howell 45

Senior Evan Romano and junior Jayden Hodge each scored 20 points and the Purple Roses coasted to a win over the Rebels. Romano also grabbed seven rebounds and handed out three assists, while Hodge pitched in six rebounds, three assists, five steals and two blocked shots.

Senior Bryan Ebeling added 13 points and senior Matt Breen chipped in eight points and seven rebounds for St. Rose.

 

Non-Division

Keansburg 46, Asbury Park 38

Neptune 39, Ocean 30

Seniors Jayden Myrthil and Donnie Stevenson each scored 11 points and the Scarlet Fliers struck down the Spartans for their second straight win to open the season after going 1-20 in 2023-24.

Junior Aidan Saint Louis led Ocean with nine points.

Jackson Liberty 49, Pinelands 48

Sophomore Jayden Hartnett scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while senior brother, Corey, added 15 points to help the Lions pull out a win in their season opener of the Wildcats.

Corey Harnett also went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and Jayden hit 3-of-5 three-point attempts.

Senior Tyler Ferguson scored 15 points and senior Ty Kline added 13 points, six rebounds and seven assists for Pinelands, which had a chance to win the game on a baseline out-of-bounds play, but Jackson Liberty held firm to close it out.

No. 7 Red Bank 55, Colts Neck 45

Senior Ryan Fisher scored 18 points and classmate Zayier Dean poured in 17 to lead the Bucs to a road win over the Cougars that extends their season-opening win streak to four.

Senior Anthony Moore added nine points and sophomore Justin Valentino pitched in eight for Red Bank. Senior Lukas Sloane led Colts Neck with a game-high 26 points, while junior Dillon Younger added 12 in the Cougars’ season-opening loss.

Barnegat 53, Long Branch 49 (OT)

Senior Todd Muhammad hit a game-tying three-pointer with a minute left in regulation and, after falling behind by five in overtime, the Bengals closed the game on a 9-0 run to seal a road win over the Green Wave.

Senior Mason Krey led Barnegat with 21 points, while Muhammad finished with 10.

No. 6 Freehold Boro 66, Freehold Twp. 57

Senior Brian Tassey put up 18 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks and the Colonials beat the Patriots in the Kuhnert Memorial Classic for just the second time in the last 20 meetings.

Senior Qua’Mir Everett contributed 16 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two blocked shots, while classmate Aidan Hamlin-Woolfolk poured in 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Freehold Boro. Junior Mike Cush also netted nine points in the win.

Sophomore John O’Neill scored 15 points to lead Freehold Township and both Nick Cardone and Jordan Dulnuan scored 11 points apiece in the loss.

Lacey 63, Middletown South 60

Senior Frank Smith scored a career-high 24 points and the Lions bounced back from a season-opening loss to Point Beach by outlasting the Eagles in their home-opener.

Senior Jon Stabile added 15 points and seven rebounds, while senior D.J. Duffy chipped in eight points and four assists for Lacey.

Senior Anthony Mazza led the defensive effort with seven steals and also handed out four assists to go with his four points.

Senior Brady Hahn pumped in a game-high 30 points to lead Middletown South, while junior Matt Trimble pitched in 12 in the loss.

Lakewood 54, Toms River South 46

Senior Cris Rosario scored a game-high 23 points and the Piners battled past the Indians for their first win of the season and the first win for first-year coach Tim Reddan.

Junior Ronny Cuevas added 16 points and sophomore Isaiah Shade pitched in eight for Lakewood.

Senior Shane Gambarony led Toms River South with 21 points.

Middletown North 45, Manchester 42

Senior Colin Byrne scored a game-high 15 points and sophomore Nate Tyburczy added 11 to help power the Lions to a road win over the Hawks.

Senior Aidan Lunn also scored 15 points to lead Manchester and junior Malik Pharmes added 10 in the loss.

Red Bank Catholic 71, Marlboro 64

Senior Ryan Prior scored 26 points and classmate Sean Saxton added 17 to help the Caseys prevail over the Mustangs in a wild, see-saw game.

Junior James Hankowski hit three three-pointers for nine points and junior Jake Frankel added eight points for Red Bank Catholic, which squandered a 10-point second-quarter lead by halftime, then erased a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to pull in front for good. Junior Nolan Davis hit the three-pointer that gave the Caseys the lead for good with just over two minutes left.

Sophomore Nolan Gong scored all 17 of his points after the first quarter to lead Marlboro and junior Christian Elmasri added 16 in the loss. Junior Ajay Matthews also contributed nine points for the Mustangs.

No. 8 Southern 50, No. 10 Jackson Memorial 47

Junior Jake Sliwinski scored 18 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists, including a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left that capped the scoring and nailed down a win for the Rams over the Jaguars.

Sophomore Noah Perna added 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals for Southern. Perna had the second of two field goals that helped keep Jackson Memorial at bay in the final three minutes, with the sophomore hitting a baseline fadeaway that bounced around the rim and in for a 48-43 Rams lead with under 1:30 to play. A minute earlier, senior Cooper Dempsey stuck a three-pointer that gave Southern a 46-42 lead.

Junior Randy Holmes led Southern with 15 points, including a three-pointer that offset Dempsey’s triple and cut the Jackson Memorial deficit to 46-45. Junior Jimmy Papalardo added 12 points and five rebounds and freshman Mi’Aire Anderson posted 10 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

Non-Conference

Henry Hudson 90, Somerset Tech 52

Junior Billy Quinn led four Henry Hudson players in double-figures with a career-high 26 points and the Admirals coasted to a win over Somerset Tech.

Sophomore JoJo Newell added 17 points, while senior Phinn Kozic and junior Masio Tucker each added 10 points for Henry Hudson.

New Egypt 66, Academy Charter 40

Junior Nolan Armond went off for 31 points and the Warriors rolled to a win over Academy Charter — their first victory of 2024-25. Junior Clyde Ferris added nine points and classmate Ryan Reynolds pitched in eight for New Egypt.

Dante Lyons scored 25 points to lead Academy Charter.

Manalapan 60, East Brunswick 57

Senior Aiden Sosinov erupted for 35 points and the Braves went on the road and beat the Bears to pick up a victory in their season-opener.

Junior Dean Aviles added 17 points and went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line, while junior George Hardy connected on a key, late three-pointer for his lone points of the game.
