The Colts climb to the top spot by virtue of a 2-0 week against Archbishop Stepinac (NY) and No. 7 Wall coupled with another loss for Rumson-Fair Haven. Sophomore Danny Varone had two strong outings with a combined five goals and two assists. Junior Christian Fox finished the week with three goals and three assists. The Colts’ defense was particularly strong, allowing just five goals in the two games, as senior goalie Shayne Boreson recorded 16 saves. The argument for the early-season top spot will be settled on Tuesday as CBA travels to No. 2 Rumson-Fair Haven. The Colts then have road games against New Canaan (NY) and Toms River East later in the week.

The Bulldogs handled their first American Division game against Toms River East without an issue, winning 17-4, but managed to drop their second game of the season in a 7-6 loss to Scotch Plains-Fanwood. The good news for the Bulldogs is that both of the opponents they lost to so far are ranked in the NJ Advance Media Top 20 with, Chatham sitting at No. 6 and Scotch Plains-Fanwood sitting at No. 15 in the preseason poll. In even better news, the Bulldogs have an opportunity to seize the top spot back from CBA on Tuesday. Later in the week, Rumson-Fair Haven will travel to Manhasset (NY) and New Canaan (CT).

3. Southern (4-0) Last Week: 4

The Rams have passed all four of their tests with flying colors so far this season. A 10-2 win over No. 6 Shore, followed by a 13-3 win over Strath Haven (PA), keeps the Rams as one of only two teams in the top ten with a perfect record so far. Juniors Cash McVey and Kyle Sininsky have been sensational on offense so far. McVey scored seven goals and recorded two assists during the week, while Sininsky added seven goals and four assists. Junior goalie Nick Hughes was a force in the net in both games, combining for 28 saves. Southern will travel to Washington Township this week who is also 4-0, before going toe-to-toe with No. 5 Manasquan and No. 7 Wall.

4. Holmdel (3-1) Last Week: 9

The Hornets are this week’s biggest riser after a week in which they routed Red Bank Catholic and made a statement in a 13-7 win against Manasquan to jump the Warriors in the rankings. Junior attacker David Perrotti has been a scoring machine combining for eight goals in both games. Senior midfielder Jack Cannon’s return after not playing last spring has been a welcome one as he had three goals and six assists in the last two games. Cannon’s quarterback vision on the football field is proving to translate on the lacrosse field as well. Holmdel has two more big games on tap this week as they travel to No. 9 Red Bank and then host Old Bridge.

5. Manasquan (2-1) Last Week: 3

It is too early to sound the alarm after the Warriors lost to Holmdel in their only game last week. It may simply be the case of Holmdel being much better than expected. Manasquan will have a chance to climb back up this week when they host No. 3 Southern on Wednesday before traveling to Moorestown.

6. Shore (1-1) Last Week: 6

The Blue Devils split a pair of games in their first week of action with a 15-2 win over East Brunswick and a 10-2 loss against No. 3 Southern. With just one loss to the third-ranked team in the Shore Conference, it is too early to move them. Shore’s most consistent player on offense has been senior Reid Spallone who combined for four goals and four assists over the two games. The Blue Devils have two key division games on the schedule this week against No. 8 Toms River East and No. 9 Red Bank.

7. Wall (2-3) Last Week: 5

It was a less than ideal week for the Crimson Knights who were not very competitive in a 12-1 loss against No. 1 CBA and an 18-3 loss against traditional South Jersey power Haddonfield. Senior attacker Wyatt Capro was able to find the net once in both games. Wall is at an early season crossroads this week with two tough games on the road at Mainland and at No. 3 Southern. The Crimson Knights started last season 2-3 as well and even dipped all the way to 3-9 before roaring back down the stretch so this is a team that has proven to show significant improvement as the season goes along.

8. Toms River East (0-1) Last Week: 7

The Raiders had their hands full with No. 2 Rumson-Fair Haven on opening day going down 9-0 at the end of the first quarter and 14-1 at the half. Senior midfielder Nicholas Caruso was a bright spot with two goals and an assist. Toms River East will have to show what they are made of quick as the schedule does not relent with games against No. 6 Shore and No. 1 CBA on tap this week.

9. Red Bank (2-2) Last Week: 8

Still undefeated in Shore Conference games, the Bucs went 1-1 again this week with a 17-6 loss to Westfield who is ranked 11th in the state rankings before handling East Brunswick 16-5. Junior Justin Valentino was on a heater this past week with eight goals and six assists over two games. Red Bank is set to host Freehold Township early in the week in a game they will be favored in before hosting No. 4 Holmdel and No. 6 Shore in two critical division games.

10. Howell (2-0) Last Week: 10

The Rebels accomplished what they set out to do winning both games this week against Middletown North and Freehold Township. Senior attacker Mike Kelly has been a problem for defenses with 11 goals and an assist through two games. Senior midfielder Cole Reinsdorf has been equally as effective with 10 goals through two games. Howell has an intriguing matchup with Middletown South on the road on Wednesday. The Eagles hung in the game with No. 7 Wall so they will be no walkover. The Rebels will then host Brick Memorial on Saturday.
