SSI Week 4 Softball Top 10

 

 

1. Donovan Catholic (18-0) Last Week: 1 – Donovan had a busy week, going 6-0. The Griffins biggest win came against No. 2 Red Bank Catholic and they followed that up with a three game sweep in the Hammonton Invitational. Donovan’s bats are heating up with Isabella Cino and Jaelynn Nunez leading the Shore Conference with seven home runs each. Donovan is set to be the No. 1 seed in the Shore Conference Tournament, which starts this week. On Wednesday the Griffins travel to play No. 7 Marlboro and they will follow that up with a game on the road against No. 5 Middletown North on Friday. 

 

2. St. John Vianney (10-1) Last Week: 3 – The Lancers are currently on a six game winning streak and got revenge from their loss to Red Bank Catholic on 4/15. After opening the week with a 9-0 win over No. 5 Marlboro, SJV defeated No. 2 RBC 13-3 on Wednesday. The bats exploded for seven runs in the 4th inning with two home runs. SJV ended the week with a 10-0 win over No. 8 Middletown South in the Monmouth County Tournament Black Bracket semifinal. SJV travels to South Plainfield on Monday in a non-conference game and hosts No. 5 Middletown North on Wednesday before the SCT starts. 

 

3. Red Bank Catholic (13-3) Last Week: 2 – After winning ten straight games, RBC fell to No. 3 SJV and No. 1 Donovan Catholic last week. RBC made six errors and left nine runners on base against Donovan in a 4-2 loss. The Caseys opened the week with a win against No. 7 Colts Neck and ended the week with a win against No. 10 Raritan. Freshman Mackenna Savage started the last two games for RBC and pitched well against No. 1 Donovan before earning the victory against Raritan. RBC travels to No. 8 Middletown South on Monday and hosts Red Bank Regional on Tuesday. The Caseys end the week with a non-conference game against Allentown on Friday. 

 

4. Colts Neck (6-7) Last Week: 7 – After falling to No. 2 Red Bank Catholic on Monday, Colts Neck rebounded and defeated No. 4 Middletown North 4-0. The Cougars followed that up with a 15-6 win against Matawan. Angela Sasso continues to excel on the mound and at the plate. She is top ten in strikeouts with 102 and is batting .395 on the season. Junior Gabriella Bryce has caused problems for opposing pitchers, batting .489 on the season. Colts Neck hosts Howell on Tuesday and travels to No. 9 Southern on Wednesday before they start the SCT. 

 

5. Middletown North (8-7) Last Week: 4 – Middletown North opened the week with a division win against Freehold Township, but fell to No. 7 Colts Neck 4-0. The Lions ended the week with a non-divisional game against Howell. Abby Esposito went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs in that game. Seton Hall commit Madilynn Boyce has 181 strikeouts on the season, which is second in the Shore Conference. Boyce is six strikeouts away from 1,000 on her career. Middletown North travels to Toms River East on Monday and hosts Manasquan on Tuesday in non-divisional games. On Wednesday the Lions travel to No. 2 SJV to finish their Class A North schedule.

 

6. Pinelands (12-1) Last Week: 6 – After losing to Howell on 4/19, Pinelands defeated Manasquan, Wall and Toms River North to clinch the Class B South title. Hannah Theuret and Kendall Falduto continue to cause problems for opposing pitchers, batting over .400 on the season. Pinelands has three other hitters batting over .300 on the season. Pinelands host Manchester on Monday and play Jackson Memorial on Tuesday at Adventure Crossing for the Ocean County Tournament championship. 

 

7. Marlboro (7-6) Last Week: 5 –. Marlboro’s up and down season continues, losing four out of their last five games. The Mustangs win in that span was to Cedar Grove, who is ranked in the top ten in New Jersey.  Marlboro lost two Class A North games last week. First to No. 3 SJV 9-0 then to Freehold Township 10-3. Marlboro can be a dangerous team in the postseason if they can put together. Monday they travel to Jackson Memorial and Wednesday they host No. 1 Donovan Catholic. 

 

8. Middletown South (11-3) Last Week: 8 – Middletown South started the week winning a pitching duel against Holmdel 1-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Monmouth County Tournament. The Eagles followed that with a Class B North win over Freehold Boro before falling to No. 2 SJV in the semifinal round of the Monmouth County Tournament. Middletown South ended the week with a win against Old Bridge. Sophomore Riley Smith is top five in the Shore Conference in both strikeouts and ERA for the season. Middletown South hosts No. 3 Red Bank Catholic on Monday and travels to No. 5 Middletown North on Saturday. 

 

9. Southern (9-6) Last Week: 9 – After winning four games in a row, Southern fell to Haddon Township in the Hammonton Invitational semifinal round. Southern opened the week with wins against Manasquan, Toms River East and Central. Southern finished second in Class A South with a 6-2 record behind No. 1 Donovan Catholic. Emily Evans continues to crush the baseball with a .533 batting average which is in the top ten in the Shore Conference. Southern hosts No. 4 Colts Neck on Wednesday and travels to Toms River North on Thursday. Southern ends their Class B schedule with an away game against Point Boro on Friday.

 

10. Raritan (14-2) Last Week: 10 – Raritan was on a five game win streak until they fell to No. 2 Red Bank Catholic on Saturday. The Rockets remain in contention for the Class B North title after beating Monmouth and Holmdel last week. Freshman Katelyn Ruta has had a great rookie season, currently top ten in ERA in the Shore Conference. Raritan hosts Freehold Township on Monday and travels to Toms River North on Wednesday in two non-divisional games before the SCT starts. The final Class B North game against Middletown South to determine the division winner is scheduled for 5/14.
