Monmouth County Tournament

Opening Round

(13) Marlboro 8, (4) Colts Neck 5

Winning pitcher Ethan Mecchi delivered a go-ahead two-run triple during Marlboro’s six-run seventh inning and the Mustangs stunned the Cougars to advance to the Monmouth County Tournament quarterfinals despite being no-hit through six innings.

Mecchi took over on the mound in the bottom of the sixth during the middle of a Colts Neck rally that gave the Cougars a 5-2 lead heading to the seventh after Marlboro tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the sixth. R.J. Conover hit a tiebreaking RBI single to give Colts Neck a 3-2 lead and after a walk to Joe Pignatelli, Mecchi replaced starter Mark Risi with runners on first and second base.

Ryan Westby dropped down a bunt with the runners on the move and Conover scored while Pignatelli made it to third on the play, with Westby beating the play at first . Marlboro then tried to back-pick Pignatelli at third base and Pignatelli scored when the throw made it into leftfield, with Westby going to second. Mecchi stranded the runner in scoring position with a strikeout and a fly out.

Nick Pignatelli took a no-hitter into the seventh but Risi immediately ended it with a leadoff single. After a pair of one-out walks to load the bases, Colts Neck lifted Nick Pignatelli for Aiden Bain. Chris Scaff and Ethan Huang drew back-to-back RBI walks to pull Marlboro within 5-4 and Chris Joy tied the game with a sacrifice fly off another new pitcher, Austin Hardy.

Mecchi then ripped a line drive into the gap to score both Scaff and Huang, giving Marlboro a 7-5 lead. Mecchi would later scored on a passed ball to cap the scoring.

Sujay Sesha walked Jack Dugo to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but retired the next three batters, including two via strikeout.

Class A South

Southern 9, No. 2 Brick Memorial 7

Korey Martin smacked a single to rightfield with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh and all three runners scored on an outfield fielding error — a stunning turn of events in Southern’s final at-bat that ultimately delivered the Rams an upset win over the Mustangs, who dropped their third straight since knocking off DePaul Catholic on Saturday.

The three runs that scored on Martin’s base hit gave Southern an 8-7 lead and another error on a ground ball hit by Dawson Howarth plated Martin to make it 9-7. Brick Memorial committed two of its three errors in the top of the seventh, which started with a pair of walks to lead it off. James Martin came in and retired the first batter he faced, then gave up an infield single winning pitcher Pat Davis that loaded the bases.

Aiden Johnson took the ball for the bottom of the seventh and set down the side in order to record his first save.

Brody Moore opened the scoring for Brick Memorial with a two-run double and after Joe McGlynn followed that up with a double to put two in scoring position, Trevor Kish cashed in with a two-run single to make it 4-0.

Southern answered Brick Memorial each time the Mustangs scored, first with three runs in the top of the fourth. Davis got the Rams on the board with an RBI single and Howarth came through with a two-out, two-run single to pull Southern within 4-3.

Brick Memorial added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Kish and another on a throwing error on Brody Moore’s stolen base, allowing Dan Golembiewski to score.

After Southern scored on a double-steal and a ground out in the fifth to make it 6-5, McGlynn clubbed a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to give Brick Memorial a 7-5 lead going to the seventh.

Lacey 2, New Egypt 1

Evan Greenberg drove in the winning run with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh and the Lions walked off with a win over the Warriors, making sophomore Jayden McNeil a winner in his 10-strikeout three-hitter.

Dalton Johnson led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk and gave way to pinch-runner Chris Jordan. After a balk moved the winning run to second, Nathan Baran laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on an error, planting runners on the corners with none out. Anthony Vidal responded with a strikeout for the first out and New Egypt opted to intentionally walk leadoff hitter Brayden Messina to lead the bases. Greenberg fell behind, 0-2, but made the Warriors pay by punching a single into centerfield to bring home Jordan with the winning run.

Messina got Lacey on the board in the bottom of the third with a one-out single and reached second on an error in the outfield. He then took third on a ground out to the right side and scored on a passed ball to open the scoring.

Vidal tied the game in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run — the first career long ball for the New Egypt sophomore.

Non-Division

No. 10 Point Beach 9, Brick 0

Tommy Conroy took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and after surrendering back-to-back singles with one out, he recovered to finish off a two-hit shutout to deliver the Garnet Gulls their third straight win.

Conroy did not walk a batter, but did hit two batters during the first three innings to throw him off-course for a perfect game. After Conroy struck out the first batter of the bottom of the seventh, John Renda lined a single to leftfield on a 1-2 pitch. James Donoghue then swatted a single into right and Point Beach closed out the win with Conroy’s ninth strikeout, followed by catch Danny Lubach throwing out Donoghue on the basepaths for the final out.

Conroy also doubled home a run in the fifth inning, during which Point Beach scored three times to go up 7-0. Carson Pfeifer contributed RBI singles in both the first and seventh innings and also doubled and scored in the top of the third as part of a three-hit game.
