Class A South

No. 10 Point Beach 11, No. 2 Brick Memorial 10

Sophomore Thomas Slobiski drove a 1-1 pitch into deep right-centerfield with two out and when it landed in play, Dan Lubach scored the winning run from third base to cap a six-run seventh that carried the Garnet Gulls to an improbable win over a Mustangs team that upset DePaul Catholic two days earlier.

After a ground out to open the bottom of the seventh, eight straight Point Beach batters reached base to tie the game, 10-10, with an RBI single to rightfield by junior Brody Powers tying the game, 10-10. Sophomore Jack Moriarty, who entered the game to pitch when Powers came to bat, bounced back to notch a strikeout and threw a 1-0 fastball past Slobiski. On the 1-1 pitch, Slobiski caught up to another fastball and launched it over the head of rightfielder Michael Figner and off the fence on a hop, allowing Lubach — who was intentionally walked — to trot home as the winning run.

Brick Memorial senior first baseman Dan Golembiewski socked his second home run of the game in the top of the seventh inning to extend Brick Memorial’s lead to 10-5 — a solo shot to right field to go with his three-run home run in the fourth inning that broke a 5-5 tie.

Senior left-hander James Martin struck out the side in order in his first inning of work and retired the first out of the bottom of the seventh on a ground out to second baseman Trevor Kish. The rally then began with a walk to Slobiski and senior Dan Coleman beat out an infield single  for his second hit of the game after coming off the bench to replace starter Matt Rossi after Rossi was hit on the knee by a pitch. Martin then hit No. 9 hitter Devin Ryan to load the bases and winning pitcher Tommy Conroy then ripped a single into rightfield that scored two runs thanks to a fielding error in rightfield, with Conroy also moving up to second base on the error.

Freshman Mason Sesny then hit a firm ground ball that skipped under Kish’s outreached glove and into rightfield to plate two more runs, cutting the Brick Memorial lead to 10-9. A wild pitch moved Sesny to second and it prompted Brick Memorial to intentionally walk Lubach, a two-time First Team All-Shore catcher as the potential winning run.

Moriarty then replaced Martin and Powers greeted him with a line drive into right field that scored Sesny from second with the tying run. Moriarty then hit junior Carson Pfeifer with a 2-2 curveball to load the bases, then struck out Antonio Acevedo for the second out of the inning. Slobiski then stepped in and delivered Point Beach’s biggest swing of the young season.

No. 3 Wall 8, Southern 6 (8 Innings)

Will Hague hit a two-out, game-tying RBI double in the top of the seventh to help Wall survive into extra innings and sophomore Jackson Soos delivered the tie-breaking, two-out RBI double that gave the Crimson Knights the win over the Rams in eight innings.

Chris Knight singled to lead off the top of the seventh and reached second on a wild pitch with one out, but was stuck there until Hague doubled to leftfield with two out to tie the game, 6-6.

Knight also came through with an RBI single for insurance in the top of the eighth after Soos’s RBI double scored Davis Harr with the go-ahead run. Harr beat out an infield single with two out to extend the inning and Soos paid off the effort with a deep drive to centerfield to chase Harr home from first.

Dan Hennessy pitched 5 1/3 innings of relief to pick up his second win of the year, the first of which came in relief at Jackson in another eight-inning road win in which the Crimson Knights trailed heading into the seventh inning.

Manasquan 3, Point Boro 1

Chase Kaplan and Liam Opatosky covered the seven innings on the mound for Manasquan and were in the middle of both run-scoring rallies to lead the Warriors over the Panthers.

Kaplan reached on an error in the first and scored on an RBI single by Opatosky to break open the scoring. Point Boro answered with an unearned run of its own in the top of the second off Kaplan.

In the bottom of the third, Kaplan led off with a double and scored his second run of the game when Opatasky’s hit a ground ball that was misplayed into an error. Kellan Quin then followed with an RBI double to score Opatosky and give Manasquan a 3-1 lead.

Kaplan fired his 10th strikeout for the first out of the seventh inning before Ryan Kowalewski singled and Nick Carmino worked a seven-pitch walk to push Kaplan’s pitch count beyond the single-game limit of 110. Opatosky retired the only two batters he faced on a fly out and a ground out to earn the save and end the game.

Tyler Dean drew Pinelands even with an RBI single in the top of the third inning. Manchester regained the lead in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Sean Colling to score Brody Boyd, who walked, stole second and went to third on an errant throw to set up the scoring opportunity with one out.

Pinelands loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with one out on a walk and two hit batters but Spaziano struck out the final two batters of the game to complete his night at 99 pitches.

Lacey 3, St. Rose 0

Brayden Messina smoked a two-out RBI double in the third inning and Logan Resetar delivered a two-out, two-run double for insurance in the sixth inning to back winning pitcher Zach Lodge, who combined with Andrew Hollister on a shutout that helped the Lions hand the Purple Roses their first loss.

A two-out error opened the door for Lacey against University of Pittsburgh commit Peter Nolan in the bottom of the third and Messina took advantage with a double into the gap to score Strummer Caputo from first base.

Ryan McCarthy led off the top of the seventh with a single and Lodge issued a one-out walk to John Lyman, bringing the potential tying run to the plate. Hollister took over on the mound and struck out the first batter he faced before walking Nick Ferrante to load the bases. The senior right-hander induced a pop-up to Caputo in leftfield to end the game.
