Shore Sports Insider Softball Week 2 Rankings

 

1. St. John Vianney (1-0) Last Week 1: – The Lancers started the season with a 5-0 win over Middletown South. Monmouth commit Madison McDougall struck out 16 batters in the shutout. Junior Brynn Utter picked up where she left off last season and drove in a run and had two hits. SJV has a busy week with four games coming up. They start the week with division games against Middletown North and Colts Neck at home. Friday they play in an event at Pope John, and Saturday they travel to Columbia.

2. Donovan Catholic (2-0) Last Week: 2 – Donovan started the season with two division wins against Central and Jackson. The bats are already in midseason form with Isabella Cino belting two home runs in two games and driving in six runs. Auburn commit Isabella Maria has collected four hits and drove in three runs to start the year. The Griffins start the week with two division games, traveling to Pinelands on Tuesday and hosting Point Boro on Thursday. Donovan joins SJV in an event hosted by Pope John on Friday and Saturday they play Immaculate Heart.

3. Middletown South (3-1) Last Week: 6 – Middletown South is this week’s big mover with three wins including a win against formerly No. 3 Red Bank Catholic and a win against A.L. Johnson, who is the 13th ranked team in New Jersey. Against Johnson, Olivia Wisiak drove in both runs in a 2-0 victory. Junior Riley Smith has started the season with 42 strikeouts and only has allowed three earned runs. Junior Mia Collins has driven in three runs for the Eagles at the plate. The schedule does not get any easier with Middletown South traveling to No. 6 Marlboro on Tuesday and Middletown North on Wednesday in two division games.

4. Colts Neck (1-0) Last Week: 4 – After a preseason trip to Florida, Colts Neck returned home and opened the season Saturday with a 3-0 win over Middletown North. Angela Sasso struck out 8 batters in the victory. Gabby Bryce and Katherine Rizzo both doubled in a run for the Cougars. Colts Neck is another team with four games this week with three division games before the weekend. On Monday they host No. 5 Red Bank Catholic and Wednesday they travel to No. 1 St. John Vianney. They play No. 6 Marlboro on Thursday before traveling to Seton Hall University on Saturday to play Mount St. Dominic who is currently the top-ranked team in New Jersey according to NJ Advance Media.

5. Red Bank Catholic (1-1) Last Week: 3 – The Caseys started the season with a 3-0 win over Middletown North. Sophomore Mackenna Savage struck out 12 batters in her first start as the full-time starter. Savage followed that with 22 strikeouts in a 10-inning loss to Middletown South. Junior Grace Lombardi continues her superb hitting from last season, going 3-for-6 with all three hits being doubles to start the season. RBC travels to No. 4 Colts Neck on Monday and No. 6 Marlboro on Wednesday in two division games. On Thursday, the Caseys play St. Joseph by the Sea (NY), and on Saturday they travel to Ivy Hill Park to play Hanover Park.

6.Marlboro (1-0) Last Week: 5  –. Marlboro, like Colts Neck, played their preseason in Florida and played their first regular season game Saturday. Trailing 4-1, the Mustangs scored five runs in the 4th inning and defeated formerly No. 9 Southern 9-4. Junior Ashlee Chen had a triple and drove in four runs in the game. Senior Emily Gaudio struck out eight batters in the win. Marlboro has no breaks this week with three divisional games. They host No. 3 Middletown South on Tuesday and No. 5 Red Bank Catholic on Wednesday. Marlboro ends the week at No. 4 Colts Neck. 

 

7. Barnegat (3-0) Last Week: 8 – Barnegat picked-up two divisional wins last week to improve to 2-0 in the Independence Division. They defeated Toms River East 2-1 to start the week and then shutout New Egypt 12-0.  Junior Gianna Gomez starts the season with 47 strikeouts over three games. Freshman Mikaila Wickham hit the first home run of her career and started her season 3-for-5 with four RBI’s. Barnegat travels to Toms River South on Tuesday and hosts Point Beach on Thursday in two division games. On Friday, they host Pinelands in a non-divisional game.

 

8.Holmdel (2-0) Last Week: 10 – Holmdel sits on top of the Colonial Division with two wins to start the season. The Hornets started the season with a 14-2 win over Wall and a 6-2 win over formerly No. 7 Raritan. Senior Julia Henderson has 18 strikeouts to start the season and allowed two earned runs. Sophomore Molly Debias is 5-for-6 to start the season and Natalie Clifford hit her first home run of the season and drove in three runs. Holmdel will look to improve to 4-0 in the division this week when they travel to Matawan on Wednesday and Howell on Thursday.

9. Raritan (1-1) Last Week: 7 – Raritan started the season with a 7-1 win over Matawan. The Rockets rallied with five runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to secure the win. Lila Houlihan and Janelle Clausi both drove in two runs in the game and Katelyn Ruta struck out eight batters to earn the win. Raritan fell to No. 10 Holmdel in a division battle on Thursday. Raritan struggled to take advantage of their base runners in the loss. Raritan travels to Freehold Township on Monday and hosts Howell on Wednesday in two division games. The Rockets travel to Central on Friday in a non-divisional game and then host Woodbridge in a non-conference game on Saturday. 

 

10.St. Rose (3-1) Last Week: Not Ranked – St. Rose had a big week with the bats, beating rival Wall 13-3 and following that up with a division win over Shore, 8-1. Freshman Morgan Mcgee has started the season 9-for-13 with two home runs and eight RBI’s. Senior Emily Torresdal has 46 strikeouts in four starts to start the season. St. Rose hosts Freehold Boro on Tuesday and Manasquan on Wednesday in two division games. On Friday, they travel to Ocean in a non-divisional game and host Brick Memorial on Saturday.
